My Mum is truly my inspiration. She started her own business when she was just 18. After leaving school at 15 she worked in a local hair salon for 2 years and when a local shop came available she opened her own salon ‘Rona’s’ in the early 60’s. My Grandad fitted out the salon and Nanna used to shampoo to help out.
When she was in her early 40’s and following a divorce Mum set up a business making vegetarian ready meals. KK Wholefoods (now known as KK Fine Foods and based in Deeside). It very quickly grew and before long she employed 60 staff and supplied most large pub chains with gourmet vegetarian options for their menus. It was hard work! Mum used to leave the house at 6am and sometimes wouldn’t be back till gone midnight. She did this while raising three children and nurturing a new relationship.
Without a doubt Mum inspired me to want to have my own business. I spent all my school and Uni holidays working in Mums factory on the production line. This is where I learned about the focus, commitment and dedication required to run your own business. There was a regional TV show in the 80’s called Flying Start presented by Tony Wilson. It was a small business competition and one year Mum and her business won. I was so proud of her!
She sold her business many years ago and is enjoying a long and happy retirement…she’s still in business but in a less all consuming way!
Right from the start of me setting up North Wales Upholstery she has been fantastically supportive. She was my first customer at NWU and bought one of the first ever Baa Stools, insisting on paying full price and encouraging friends and family to do the same. Her advice along the way has been invaluable. She understand the demands of a young, growing business and the time and commitment it requires. She helped to give this business wings.
When Mum opened her salon my Nanna used to shampoo to help out when it was busy. Occasionally Mum spends the day at the barn as part of #TeamBaa. Her favourite job it to apply the sheepie ribbon trim… and it’s lovely to have her here…like history repeating itself.
