It can be so invigorating and yet so cosy to use the colours of autumn in your home décor. It’s great to think that you’re appreciating the season and all it has to offer, while bringing some of that inspiration indoors. Also, the gorgeous amber, orange and brown hues of the fall can feel really comforting and warming when used effectively.
Here are 5 tips for using autumn colour in your home décor home this autumn.
Tip Number 1: Find Meaning in Colour
The psychology of colour is fascinating. According to colour therapy, red is the colour of love and it stimulates the heartbeat. Yellow is thought to be an optimistic and uplifting colour that promotes mental activity. Orange implies enthusiasm and happiness. Purple, being a rare colour in nature, symbolises mystery, dignity and wisdom. Whereas calming brown represents stability. So, through using colour, with all its subliminal messages, you can either make your home feel more enlivening or more soothing. It’s entirely up to you!
Choosing some of our rare-breed sheepskin furnishings, such as our beautiful Éclair Sheepskin Benches, in completely natural colours, would add a calming, comforting effect, while brightening up a room with an Uber Pouffe in Fuchsia or Lilac, for example, would provide an energising buzz. At Baa Stool, we can provide sheepskin in all of the following autumn colours: Copper, Piccalilli, Sage, Teal, Chocolate and Aubergine. So, get creative with colour – and with sheepskin – and create the effect that’s right for you.
Tip number 2: Find balance in design
According to a blog written by ‘Copper and Holly’, the maths of interior design is very important. They explain that “In interior design, one of the most commonly used concepts of distributing colour is in the 60:30:10 rule. That is one base colour in 60% of your space, and a complimentary colour for 30% of your space. The remaining 10% of space is a contrasting accent colour.”
Bearing this in mind, you may wish to opt for some of the more calming and grounding colours in paints and wallpapers (60%), while adding a different colour through some of your larger furnishings – e.g., your three-piece suite or carpet (30%). Notes of brighter colours (10%), such as vivid autumn tones, can be used to add extra cheerfulness and liveliness.
A great way to add those accent colours is by adding scatter cushions! We have some in Piccalilli or Copper which definitely speak to the goal of autumn décor. And have you met our giant pumpkin shaped pouffe? He’s been getting a whole lot of love this Autumn.
Tip number 3: Add some green!
In the autumn, although we usually think about the striking colours of the dying leaves – the maple reds, larch ambers, and beech browns – we can still find a lot of green in nature at this time of year. Just look at the fields of grass and the non-deciduous trees that abound like holly, ewe and Scots pine. Green is a colour that makes us feel rejuvenated throughout the year. As ‘Decorilla’ says, “Fall colour schemes wouldn’t be complete without green. Deep, rich hues, reminiscent of evergreen plants, pair well with browns and other seasonal colours to create a pleasant natural look.”
Remember that green provides a vast colour palette and you can use dark laurel, olive green or even blue-grey cedar in your design. Green is a great anchoring colour, to which you can add more flamboyant tones. Have a look at our Double Sheepskin Rug in Teal for inspiration, or our Tuffet for Two in Sage.
Tip number 4: Use natural materials
There are many ways to add some gorgeous autumn colour to your home without spending too much money, and one way is to create your own decorations out of natural materials. This can be done through:
A. Flower arranging – during autumn opt for orange and red chrysanthemums, dahlias and gladioli, with berries like hawthorn, spindle and rosehip.
B. Twiggy elegance – tall elegant grasses, seedheads and small branches with leaves and berries can be used in vases as an instant rustic display. Why not add a touch of gold paint or some fairy lights? If you’re feeling really adventurous, you could create your own autumn door wreaths with similar materials.
C. Candles – these are another great way to create an intimate and inviting atmosphere, and candles can smell heavenly too. Here at Baa Stool, we even have a range of home fragrance candles and diffusers complete with sheepskin stands!
Tip number 5 – Go neutral!
For some people, especially those who enjoy a more minimalist and cut-back feel to a room, autumn and all its vibrance can feel a little overwhelming. If you’d prefer to create a natural and deeply relaxing ambience, ‘My Domaine’ offers some suggestions for neutral yet stylish colour schemes. Here are just a few:
A. Blue-grey, cream, and a hint of metallic – to this colour scheme we’d add a sumptuous Swirl Cushion in black and white.
B. White, clay-toned pink, and brass – why not add some of our Georgie Baa Bar Stools to this colour scheme? They would blend perfectly.
C. Terracotta, soft grey, and white – our Éclair Sheepskin Bench in Slate Grey would complement this scheme beautifully.
D. Light blue, white and grey – have a look at our sumptuous Bed Runner in Cornflower Blue for a beautiful and uplifting accent.
