Mair goes into the garden
Mair stepped out into her garden. It was a beautiful June day and the trees were full of birdsong. Clumps of fluffy cloud drifted lazily through blue sky and sunshine. The heady scent of yellow broom filled the garden and delighted the buzzing honey bees. Mair let her fingers brush against the pink and blue lupins, which stood tall and straight like sentries on either side of her garden path. A gentle breeze swept through the garden, making their heads bow as if in recognition of her passing.
She smiled to herself and followed the path towards the small orchard just around the corner. She loved the sheltered spot beside the high garden wall. In one hand she held a novel by her favourite author; in the other, a glass of cool, homemade lemonade. The ice tinkled in the glass as she walked.
Briefly she glanced into the gilt-edged mirror that hung on the garden’s red-brick wall. She enjoyed the way it was draped with ivy and reflected the view of the apple trees in the orchard. It looked like a magical, light-filled door, inviting her to step through it into a mystical world.
On her old deckchair, Mair had already placed a beautiful Baa Stool Short Wool Star Cushion for comfort, and a Merino Diamond Throw in case it turned chilly later. On the paving slabs at her feet was a beautiful Sheepskin Rug in ivory. She noted how the colour seemed to complement the nearby pink mullein and flamboyant peonies. She slipped off her sandals, made herself comfortable in the deckchair and allowed her feet to sink into the soft yet cooling sheepskin. She sighed deeply, relaxing to her core.
She took a sip of tangy lemonade then placed the glass on the old garden table, on which she’d sat a Small Baa Lamb for company. She patted its little head with affection and laughed to herself. It had been a favourite of the children’s.
As she tilted back her head, she admired the ornate birdcage with its trailing clematis, which her partner had hung in the branches of the plum tree, and the tinkling windchimes that danced above the old garden gate, beneath which orange heleniums swayed merrily. What a beautiful time of year to be alive; what a wonderful day to catch a few moments of peace in her garden sanctuary.
