This is always a tricky one, isn’t it? How to choose the right accessories for your home? What kind of style or effect are you trying to create in your home? Do you have the same style of décor in each room or is each room different? Do you want to create a cosy, comfortable feel, or do you want a minimal, cut-back look? Is hygge your thing? Or perhaps you love vintage décor with antiques and curiosities?
Ultimately, only you will know which accessories appeal to you and which ones are a definite no-no. But the following list might just help you to stop and think and get it right first time. After all, none of us want to waste our hard-earned cash on buying inappropriate accessories, and we don’t want to waste our time returning items either.
So, here are our top tips for choosing accessories for your home:
If you don’t love it,
Leave it behind! Accessories come in all shapes and sizes, from baskets and vases to lamps and mirrors, and there will always be plenty to choose from. So, unless you completely fall in love with it, don’t buy it! It won’t be long until you spot the perfect item for your home and then you’ll regret having wasted your money on something that was less than perfect. Collect accessories over time and don’t rush to buy them all at once. You may even want to create an accessories cupboard, where you store your favourite items and bring them out afresh when the mood takes you.

Quality wins over quantity:
Although it’s tempting to buy the cheapest item you can find or the best deal, always consider the quality of the product. If it’s been put together hastily and made of cheap materials, it really isn’t going to last. It would be much wiser to save up for something that will last for years. Otherwise, you’re just going to have to replace it – and soon! Our advice is to buy one or two high-quality accessories and enjoy them for years, instead of buying lots of cheaper items that will soon fall apart.
Contrasting textures and colours:
Accessories can really have a big impact on a room, so think about the statement you want to make. If a room is looking tired or drab, buying a few accessories is a simple and relatively cheap way of changing the whole ambience. But think about contrasting colours and textures because you really don’t want everything to match! Large soft furnishings, like sofas or carpets, are great in neutral colours, but adding bursts of colour will create visual interest and help to break up the room. Texture has the same effect. So, buying accessories, like rugs, cushions and stools, in contrasting colours and textures will really help to enliven your space. You can even change your accessories according to the season or your mood. In this way, the room will always be interesting and inviting.

Consider the size of the room:
Buying a tiny rug for a large room won’t create much of a statement. Similarly, buying a big rug that completely fills a small room will swamp it. You don’t want your beautiful new accessory to be lost or to go unnoticed. So, don’t be afraid to measure your room to find out exactly how much space you have. And if you’re buying a signature piece of furniture, like an armchair or a chaise longue, you don’t want it to be squashed in or hidden from view. Think carefully about the space in your room and how best to show off your prized possessions.
Create a cluster:
Sometimes one large accessory creates an impact on its own – for example, a wall hanging or a big leafy plant in a huge pot. But you can really make a design statement by arranging decorative items in clusters. Mix and match those cushions, in varying fabrics and colours, on your bed. Group several vases, of different heights and breadths, together on your mantlepiece. When you arrange pictures on your wall, hang a few together for a little excitement. Try it! It really does draw attention. Therefore, when you’re shopping for accessories, decide if you want to invest in several small items at once, or consider if you already have something at home that will complement one new item.

Sustainability:
This is the final big decision, which may well be important to you and in these times of climate change and habitat destruction, this is a huge issue for many of us. Has the accessory you want to buy been made sustainably? Is the wood from a renewable and ethical source? Is the cotton, sheepskin or wool sustainable? Has the manufacturer even considered these things? These days, we all need to reflect on these issues so that we can build a better future for the next generations.
