The story

Some vintage chairs deserve to be kept together.

These two certainly did.

This matching pair of Guy Rogers Manhattan reclining chairs have all the beautiful details that make this design so recognisable – sculptural exposed timber frames, elegant arms, beautifully balanced proportions and that wonderfully relaxed mid-century profile.

We restored the pair together in our North Wales workshop, carefully retaining the character of the original frames rather than trying to make them look brand new.

Then we turned our attention to the upholstery.

The seats have been re-webbed with quality Pirelli webbing and we have made completely new cushions, shaped to work with the original chairs and their clever reclining action.

We covered the bases of the seat cushion and the back and sides of the chairs in Kirkby Design Leaf 100% recycled wool fabric in in a deep teal which perfectly matches the teal sheepskin we have used on the inside back and seat cushions.

The Manhattan reclines into three different positions. As you recline, the seat section moves forwards too, taking the cushion with it and creating a brilliantly comfortable, laid-back sitting position.

We love the combination of the strong architectural frames and the softness of sheepskin.

And because these two have survived together, been restored together and now match beautifully, we really don’t want to split them up.

Condition

Both chairs are vintage originals.

The frames are solid and sturdy and have been cleaned and restored while retaining the marks, knocks and small signs of age that belong on genuine vintage furniture.

The upholstery and cushions are newly made.

The original reclining mechanisms are retained and working.

Styling notes

These are fabulous statement chairs without feeling oversized or heavy.

They would work beautifully together in a sitting room, either side of a fireplace or coffee table, but could equally be separated within the same space.

The warm timber and tactile sheepskin sit particularly well alongside wool, linen, stone and other natural materials.

Drop note

This matching pair of vintage Guy Rogers Manhattan chairs has been individually restored and reworked for Drop 17.

As sheepskin is a natural product the wool on each of our sheepskin products is unique and can differ in texture and length.  That’s why we specify that our measurements are approximate.

Please keep the dyed colours out of strong sunlight as it may bleach and dry out the skin.  The natural colours of Ivory, Rare Breed and Chocolate will not be affected by strong sunlight.
