A wonderfully soft 180cm x 60cm yoga and meditation mat handmade from two dense, velvety Dusty Beige sheepskins. Naturally warm, tactile and grounding – a beautiful alternative to the conventional yoga mat.
The story
This is the beginning of something new at Baa Stool.
We’ve wanted to explore sheepskin for yoga, meditation and slower moments for some time, and this is our very first yoga mat.
Made using two large pieces of exceptionally dense velvety sheepskin in Dusty Beige, it measures a generous 180cm x 60cm and feels quite unlike a conventional yoga mat.
The sheepskin itself is particularly special. It is the beautifully dense quality of sheepskin used for luxury car interiors, with a short, soft, velvety wool that feels fabulous against bare hands and feet.
Sheepskin also makes rather lovely sense for slower forms of yoga and meditation. Wool is naturally insulating, helping create a warm, comfortable surface between you and a cold floor, while its soft texture makes kneeling, seated poses, stretching and relaxation feel wonderfully indulgent.
And because wool is a natural material, there’s something very fitting about using it for a practice that’s all about slowing down and reconnecting.
This isn’t intended to behave like a high-grip synthetic exercise mat for fast or sweaty practice. Think restorative yoga, Yin, meditation, stretching, breathwork and long, luxurious periods of doing very little indeed.
We rather like that last one.

We source the highest quality grade sheepskin predominantly from flocks across the UK. Where we are unable to source a specific colour within the UK we import sheepskin from New Zealand. Sheep are not farmed for their skins and sheepskin is a by-product of the food industry.

Why Baa Stool?
In 2011 I left the corporate world, moved home to rural North Wales and retrained to be an upholsterer. Two years in, during a tea break from a particularly challenging chair, I was looking at the sheep in the fields surrounding my workshop and mused ‘they look like little footstools. Hmmmmmm…sheepskin covered footstools. Oh yes!’
I spent several months developing the idea and ensuring that every detail of the product is high quality. The frames and legs are made by skilled craftsmen. The sheepskin is always premium grade and predominantly from UK flocks. I source the best upholstery materials and we upholster each Baa Stool using a mix of modern and traditional methods. This is important because I want my customers to enjoy a product that is the very best it can possibly be.
Around this exciting product a group of talented, enthusiastic and dedicated individuals gathered to form ‘Team Baa’ and a Great Little British Business was born.
I started selling Baa Stools at local artisan markets and county shows and they quickly developed a following. I noticed that the sheepskin cover upholstered on the footstools made people stop in their tracks, look closer…then, inevitably, smile. This quickly became the overall aim of every new design… to make people smile when they walk into a room.
