How To Care For Your Sheepskin Rug – 8 Easy Steps

A sheepskin rug is like a cuddle for your floor—cosy, luxurious, and full of personality. Whether you’ve popped one beside the bed, styled it across your sofa, or placed it centre stage in the living room, you’ll want to keep it looking baaa-eautiful for years to come. So here's how to care for your sheepskin rug. The good news? Sheepskin is surprisingly low maintenance. With just a few simple steps, you can keep your rug feeling fluffy, fresh, and fabulous. Here's everything you need to know about how to care for a sheepskin rug—Baa Stool style!

1. Vacuum? Gently does it!

Yes, you can vacuum your sheepskin rug—but no spinning brushes, please! These can flatten the fleece and undo all that fluffy goodness. Instead, use your vacuum’s nozzle attachment and gently run it back and forth to lift away dust and dirt without damaging the fibres.

2. Shake it off

Sometimes, all your rug needs is a good shake. Take it outside and give it a little flick to release trapped dust and help the fibres spring back to life. While you’re out there, let the fresh air flow through the fleece—sheepskin loves a bit of breeze!

3. Avoid direct sunlight

Sheepskin prefers the shade. Too much sunlight can dry out the fibres and cause the colour to fade—especially the brighter shades. If your rug lives in a sunny spot (hello, conservatory!), natural shades like Ivory, Rare Breed or Chocolate are a great choice as they’re more UV-friendly.

4. Keep it dry

Sheepskin and soggy floors are not friends. Dampness can lead to mould and damage the fleece, so always pop your rug somewhere dry. If it does get wet (life happens!), dry it slowly and naturally—no radiators or sunlight. Just give it a gentle shake and brush as it dries.

5. Spills? No stress!

Little accidents are bound to happen. If you spill something on your rug, blot it gently with a damp cloth and a touch of wool-safe detergent. Once dry, sprinkle a bit of baking soda on the spot to help neutralise any smells, then brush it out. Easy peasy.

6. Store it with care

If your rug is taking a seasonal break, give it room to breathe. Hang it over a rail or store it loosely in a breathable fabric bag. Avoid airtight containers—sheepskin needs airflow to stay in tip-top condition.

7. Brush it up

A quick brush every now and then will help keep your rug looking lush. We recommend a wire slicker brush—the same kind we send with all of our stools. Just don’t go overboard! Gentle brushing now and then will keep the fleece looking fluffy without making it too woolly.
