There’s something wonderfully wild about Icelandic sheepskin.
Recognisable by its exceptionally long, fine wool, Icelandic sheepskin has a very different character to our classic British sheepskins. The wool is silky, flowing and beautifully wispy, creating a luxurious texture with a slightly untamed appearance that we absolutely love.
Every Icelandic sheepskin is different. Natural variations in colour, markings, wool length, shape and size are all part of its character, meaning the rug you choose really is one of a kind.
Their long wool makes them particularly beautiful when draped. Throw one over the back of an armchair or sofa, soften a wooden bench, layer one at the end of a bed or use it as a striking natural rug. They work beautifully in relaxed, Scandi-inspired interiors where natural materials and texture are allowed to do the talking.
Why we love Icelandic sheepskin
Icelandic sheep are famous for their remarkable fleece. The wool has a long, flowing appearance with fine, silky tips that give each hide movement and texture.
Unlike a perfectly uniform manufactured textile, every sheepskin tells its own story. You may find changes in tone, unusual markings, curls, wisps and variations in wool length. We think that’s exactly what makes them special.
Naturally individual
Please choose your Icelandic sheepskin from the individual rugs shown. The photographs are of the actual sheepskin you will receive, so you can select the particular colour, markings and shape you love.
As a natural product, measurements are approximate and are taken at the longest and widest points, including the wool.
Styling your Icelandic sheepskin
Icelandic sheepskins are fabulous for adding softness to harder surfaces and a little contrast to clean, contemporary interiors. Try yours:
- Draped over an armchair or sofa
- Across a wooden or upholstered bench
- Layered at the foot or side of a bed
- Over a favourite reading chair
- As a statement rug beside the bed or fireplace
- Simply thrown wherever your room needs another layer of natural texture
However you use it, don’t make it too perfect. Icelandic sheepskin looks particularly lovely when it’s allowed to fall naturally.
Good to know
Because these are genuine natural sheepskins, no two are identical. Colour, markings, shape, wool texture and dimensions will vary from hide to hide.
The long, fine fibres can occasionally shed, particularly when the rug is new. A gentle shake outdoors will help freshen the wool and restore its natural movement.

We source the highest quality grade sheepskin predominantly from flocks across the UK. Where we are unable to source a specific colour within the UK we import sheepskin from New Zealand. Sheep are not farmed for their skins and sheepskin is a by-product of the food industry.

Why Baa Stool?
In 2011 I left the corporate world, moved home to rural North Wales and retrained to be an upholsterer. Two years in, during a tea break from a particularly challenging chair, I was looking at the sheep in the fields surrounding my workshop and mused ‘they look like little footstools. Hmmmmmm…sheepskin covered footstools. Oh yes!’
I spent several months developing the idea and ensuring that every detail of the product is high quality. The frames and legs are made by skilled craftsmen. The sheepskin is always premium grade and predominantly from UK flocks. I source the best upholstery materials and we upholster each Baa Stool using a mix of modern and traditional methods. This is important because I want my customers to enjoy a product that is the very best it can possibly be.
Around this exciting product a group of talented, enthusiastic and dedicated individuals gathered to form ‘Team Baa’ and a Great Little British Business was born.
I started selling Baa Stools at local artisan markets and county shows and they quickly developed a following. I noticed that the sheepskin cover upholstered on the footstools made people stop in their tracks, look closer…then, inevitably, smile. This quickly became the overall aim of every new design… to make people smile when they walk into a room.
