The classic laid-back Ercol. A beautifully restored vintage 203 Easy Chair with new sheepskin cushions, designed for relaxed, sink-in comfort.

The Ercol 203 Easy Chair is the original laid-back classic. Designed in the 1950s, it’s known for its deep seat, gentle recline and beautifully balanced proportions – a chair made for putting your feet up and staying awhile.

Each chair begins with an original vintage Ercol frame, carefully sourced and selected for its structural quality. These frames have lived a life, so you can expect age-related marks and gentle wear, all of which are shown clearly in the listing and form part of their character.

We clean, polish and restore the frame as needed, including replacing the rubber Pirelli webbing where required, before creating brand new removable zipped cushion covers in your chosen sheepskin. The reverse of each cushion is finished in a complementary wool fabric.

The 203 has a lower seat height and deeper sit, giving it that signature relaxed, almost chaise-like feel – particularly when paired with a footstool.

Dimensions (approximate)

  • Width: 71cm
  • Depth: 89cm
  • Height: 85cm
  • Seat height: 38cm

Good to Know

  • This listing is for the exact frame shown in the photographs
  • Age-related wear is to be expected and adds to its charm
  • Cushion covers are made to order in your chosen sheepskin
  • Removable zipped covers for easy care

Styling Notes

Perfect for a reading corner, fireside setting or relaxed living space, the 203 works beautifully with natural textures, warm lighting and layered textiles.

As sheepskin is a natural product the wool on each of our sheepskin products is unique and can differ in texture and length.  That’s why we specify that our measurements are approximate.

Please keep the dyed colours out of strong sunlight as it may bleach and dry out the skin.  The natural colours of Ivory, Rare Breed and Chocolate will not be affected by strong sunlight.

Our Restoration & Upholstery Process

Each of our Ercol chairs begins with an original vintage frame, carefully sourced for its quality and condition.

We don’t just reupholster – we restore and reimagine each piece with care, respecting the craftsmanship of the original design while preparing it for modern living.

Cleaning & Preparing the Frame

We begin by carefully cleaning each frame using a specialist furniture restorer. This gently removes built-up wax, dirt and surface marks while nourishing the wood and reviving the original finish without stripping it back.

Once clean, we address any light scratches or small dents, smoothing the surface where needed.

Our aim is always to preserve the natural patina that has developed over time, while ensuring the frame feels clean, smooth and ready for everyday use.

Restoring Comfort – Pirelli Webbing

Where replacement is needed, we use original Pirelli rubber webbing, as specified for Ercol furniture.

This provides the correct level of tension and support, helping the chair feel as it was originally intended, while also working sympathetically with the wooden frame to ensure long-lasting comfort and structural integrity.

Recreating the Cushion Interiors

We carefully recreate the original cushion structure using our knowledge of Ercol designs.

Each cushion is made with new, high-quality seating foam, shaped to match the original form. After testing different grades and combinations, we’ve selected a setup that offers the perfect balance of comfort and support:

  • a firmer seat cushion for structure
  • a softer back cushion for a more relaxed feel

For those looking for a more natural option, we can also supply cushions filled with 100% natural latex foam. Please get in touch for more details.

Made to Order in Your Chosen Sheepskin

Once the frame is prepared, you choose your preferred sheepskin from our collection.

We then create brand new removable zipped cushion covers in your chosen sheepskin, with a matching wool fabric on the reverse, and complete the chair in our North Wales workshop.

A Note on Vintage Character

These are genuine vintage Ercol frames, so signs of age, small marks and wear are to be expected. We always show and describe these clearly – they are part of what makes each piece unique.

The Final Finish

For the final polish, we use one of our favourite methods – a little girl power and a sheepskin polishing mitt. There’s nothing quite like sheepskin to bring out the natural shine of a vintage frame.

Which Ercol Chair is Right for You?

Choosing between Ercol chairs comes down to how you like to sit.

Ercol 203 – The laid-back lounger

  • Lower seat height
  • Deeper seat
  • More reclined position

Perfect if you love to sink in, put your feet up and fully relax. Ideal for reading corners, fireside spots and slow evenings.

Ercol 204 – The everyday all-rounder

  • Slightly higher seat
  • More upright position
  • Easier to get in and out of

A great choice if you want a chair that’s comfortable but supportive, suited to everyday sitting in living rooms or bedrooms.

Ercol Evergreen – The supportive high-back

  • Tall backrest
  • Upright posture
  • Excellent back and shoulder support

Ideal if you prefer a more supportive sit, or want a chair you can spend longer periods in comfortably.

In simple terms:

  • Want to lounge? Choose the 203
  • Want balance? Choose the 204
  • Want support? Choose the Evergreen

We source the highest quality grade sheepskin predominantly from flocks across the UK.  Where we are unable to source a specific colour within the UK we import sheepskin from New Zealand.  Sheep are not farmed for their skins and sheepskin is a by-product of the food industry.

Why Baa Stool?

Baa Stool Meet The Team

In 2011 I left the corporate world, moved home to rural North Wales and retrained to be an upholsterer.  Two years in, during a tea break from a particularly challenging chair, I was looking at the sheep in the fields surrounding my workshop and mused ‘they look like little footstools. Hmmmmmm…sheepskin covered footstools. Oh yes!’

I spent several months developing the idea and ensuring that every detail of the product is high quality.  The frames and legs are made by skilled craftsmen.  The sheepskin is always premium grade and predominantly from UK flocks.  I source the best upholstery materials and we upholster each Baa Stool using a mix of modern and traditional methods.  This is important because I want my customers to enjoy a product that is the very best it can possibly be.

Around this exciting product a group of talented, enthusiastic and dedicated individuals gathered to form ‘Team Baa’ and a Great Little British Business was born.

I started selling Baa Stools at local artisan markets and county shows and they quickly developed a following. I noticed that the sheepskin cover upholstered on the footstools made people stop in their tracks, look closer…then, inevitably, smile. This quickly became the overall aim of every new design… to make people smile when they walk into a room.
